L’installation vidéo Where does sound go, where does it come from (« où va le son, d’où vient-il ») explore la frontière – voire le point de tension – entre le son et la vision, entre ce qui est vu et ce qui ne peut être vu, mais seulement entendu. Cette installation alterne entre voir/entendre et écouter/visualiser, en s’appuyant sur le bruit blanc de l’océan comme un espace auditif d’où émergent des récits appartenant tantôt à l’imaginaire individuel tantôt à l’imaginaire collectif. Alors qu’elle se trouve en résidence à la baie de Coliumo, au Chili, pour étudier les différents modes d’orientation des pêcheurs de cette région, Sandra Volny découvre qu’ils sont capables de naviguer les eaux périlleuses et brumeuses de la côte pacifique grâce au son. Intriguée, elle organise une série d’entrevues dans lesquelles elle fait écouter aux participants – des pêcheurs des environs– des enregistrements réalisés sur la côte. Les pêcheurs se révèlent tous en mesure de localiser avec précision les baies, les côtes et les péninsules d’après l’écho des vagues contre les rochers.

Where does sound go, where does it come from explores the distance and tension inherent in the intersection of sound and sight, of seeing what cannot be seen and only heard. The video installation flips back and forth between seeing/hearing and listening/visualizing, relying on the white noise of the ocean as an auditory space for narratives of individual and collective imagination to emerge. While in Coliumo bay, Chile, investigating different modes of orientation by local fishermen, Sandra Volny discovered that they were able to navigate the treacherous, dark and foggy conditions of the Pacific coast by relying on sound. In order to explore these findings, a series of interviews were organized where field recordings of the shore were presented to participants. The local fishermen were able to precisely geolocate specific bays, shores, and peninsulas by listening to the echo of the waves against the rocks.

Vestiges gênants d’un passé colonial, les drapeaux puisent leurs origines historiques dans la navigation et la guerre. Drapeaux et étendards constituent un motif commun dans l’œuvre de Jerry Ropson depuis de nombreuses années. Intrigué par l’appropriation culturelle et matérielle de l’étoffe, l’artiste s’intéresse à la capacité du drapeau à communiquer une allégeance, à signifier un lieu et à affirmer une idéologie. Or, en subvertissant son usage, Ropson propose une représentation iconoclaste du drapeau.

With origins deep-rooted in nautical history and warfare, flags stand as an uneasy remnant of colonial history. Flags and the act of flagging have been a common motif in Jerry Ropson’s work for many years. Intrigued by cultural and material appropriations of the flag, the artist is interested in the ability of flags to communicate allegiances, to signify place, and affirm ideologies. In subverting its use, Ropson aims to incite an iconoclastic representation of the flag.

Digital Erratics explore les espaces animés et les transformations matérialisées. Frère et sœur, les artistes Tim et Elisabeth se rejoignent beaucoup dans leurs pratiques respectives, parcourant l’histoire de la sculpture et de l’image en mouvement dans un dialogue avec les outils numériques. Au moyen de matériaux et de technologies rudimentaires et de pointe, ils examinent l’aspect théâtral des matériaux. Ce dialogue fluide entre le vieux et le nouveau crée un milieu où l’imagination peut se libérer grâce à la technologie numérique tout en s’ancrant dans le monde physique. On assiste alors à de nouvelles façons de concevoir des formes sculpturales dans l’espace et le temps, dans ce que les artistes nomment l’erraticité numérique.

Digital Erratics is an investigation into animated spaces and materialized transformations. Tim and Elisabeth are siblings that share many intersections in their individual practices, both artists explore histories of sculpture and the moving image in dialogue with digital tools. They employ high and low materials and technologies to investigate how materials perform. The opportunity afforded by this fluid dialogue of old and new, invites the imagination to be liberated by digital technology while simultaneously anchored in the physical world. New possibilities for conceiving sculptural forms in space and time emerge here, in what they are calling the Digital Erratic.

Depuis quelques années, Yann Pocreau a la chance unique d’assister à la construction du nouveau Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). Dans le cadre de la Politique des arts à l’architecture, il y développe une œuvre processuelle qui culminera sous la forme d’un livre en 2021. Parallèlement, il accompagne sa mère depuis plus de trois ans dans sa démence traitée au CHUM. Devant ce double état de fait devenu son quotidien, une évidence s’est imposée : celle de réfléchir, en tant qu’artiste, sur le milieu hospitalier et sur les notions de patrimoine qu’il engage. Ainsi, le point de départ de l’exposition Patrimoines repose sur la disparition de l’actuel Hôpital Saint-Luc, une composante du CHUM bientôt démantelée, puis remplacée par une nouvelle construction. S’il est ici question d’architecture hospitalière, le projet souligne surtout notre attachement, même paradoxal, à ces lieux qui ont marqué notre existence, soit notre rapport à la naissance, à la santé, à la mort, et surtout à ces amis et parents que le cœur nous impose d’accompagner un jour ou l’autre, sinon d’un jour à l’autre.

Over the past years, Yann Pocreau has had the unique opportunity to witness the construction of the new Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). Under the Art and Architecture Integration Policy, he has been developing a process-driven work there that will culminate in 2021 in the form of a book. For over three years, he has also been accompanying his mother on her visits to the CHUM, where she is being treated for dementia. In the dual situation that has become his day-to-day reality, one thing has emerged clearly: the imperative to reflect, as an artist, on the hospital environment and the notions of heritage it conjures. The starting point of this exhibition is the disappearance of the existing Hôpital Saint-Luc, a component of the CHUM that will soon be dismantled and replaced by a new building. Hospital architecture is part of the project’s theme, but its main focus is our sometimes paradoxical attachment to these places that shape our lives and our relationships to birth, health and death – and, above all, to the friends and relations who at some point we are obliged by love to chaperone, often repeatedly.

Connu comme un pionnier de la vidéo, Bill Viola a une carrière qui s'étend sur plus de quarante années. Monobandes et installations vidéo, environnements sonores, performances musicales électroniques et émissions de télévision: dans son œuvre, il sonde des thèmes universels comme la vie, la mort, l'éveil de la conscience, l'esprit et la condition humaine. La présentation à DHC/ART réunit quatre œuvres vidéo sur écrans plats, soit The Return (2007), Ancestors (2012), Walking on the Edge (2012) et The Encounter (2012), de même qu'une œuvre projetée intitulée Ascension (2000). Son installation vidéo la plus récente, Inverted Birth (2014), sera présentée pour la première fois au Canada. Cette projection monumentale illustre les cinq étapes de l'éveil dans une série de transformations violentes qui explorent la nature même de notre existence: vie, mort, naissance et renaissance. « La naissance n'est pas un commencement, la mort n'est pas une fin », fait remarquer Viola, citant le philosophe chinois Tchouang-tseu (370-287 av. J.-C.).

Bill Viola is recognized as a pioneer in video art, with a career spanning over forty years. His work across single channel video, video installation, sound environments, electronic music performances, and broadcast television deeply examines the universal themes of life, death, the unfolding of consciousness, the spirit, and the human condition. The presentation at DHC/ART brings together four flat panel video works, The Return (2007), Ancestors (2012), Walking on the Edge (2012), and The Encounter (2012), as well as the projection work Ascension (2000). Making its Canadian debut is his most recent major installation, Inverted Birth (2014). This monumental projection depicts the five stages of awakening through a series of violent transformations, exploring the very nature of our existence: life, death, birth, and rebirth. "Birth is not a beginning, death is not an end," as Viola has remarked, quoting from the Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu (370–287 BC).

L’artiste présente une peinture à la fois énergique et délicate, qui revisite les héritages contradictoires de la pratique picturale. Les riches espaces peints par Melanie Authier, artiste établie à Ottawa, nous rappellent qu’une myriade de questions restent à résoudre au sujet de l’art après le modernisme. Pour Authier, les tableaux ne sont pas de simples objets esthétiques sans lien les uns avec les autres. Ils s’inscrivent dans un vaste réseau relationnel.

The artist shows paintings that are both dynamic and delicate, while revisiting the contradictory legacies of pictorial practice. The visually rich spaces in artist Melanie Authier’s paintings remind us that we are still negotiating a myriad of questions when we consider art after Modernism. For Authier, paintings are not simply discrete aesthetic objects. They exist within an expanded set of relations.

L’exposition inaugure une installation où l’artiste recompose et revisite de manière obsessive ses archives photographiques. Un espace délimité par des rideaux de velours blanc, des projections vidéo lo-fi et une maquette de volcan forment un parcours où les spectateurs sont invités, grâce à divers dispositifs de projection, à découvrir un assemblage d’images hybrides.

The exhibition presents an installation in which the artist obsessively recomposes and revisits her photographic archives. A space bounded by white velvet curtains, lo-fi video projections and a model of a volcano form a route where spectators are invited to discover an assemblage of hybrid images through various projection devices.

L’installation immersive et ludique Fantástica México nous emporte dans un paysage imaginaire et miniature de la ville. Ce photomontage dense créé à partir d’impressions numériques montées sous la forme de dioramas est animé par des projections en vidéo-mapping produisant un jeu d’ombres, le tout sur fond sonore des rues de Mexico. Il offre un point de vue hallucinant et singulier de cette exceptionnelle et fascinante mégapole. Inspiré de l’œuvre photographique d’Ed Rusha Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), Arthur Desmarteaux propose un portrait concentré de sa vision de l’essence de Mexico, permettant de saisir sa grandiosité et son dynamisme. Son travail présente ce paysage urbain de manière continue mais fragmentée, nous confrontant à l’impossibilité d’en avoir une vision globale et unifiée. 

The immersive and playful installation Fantástica México takes us into an imaginary and miniature landscape of the city. This dense photomontage created from digital prints and mounted in the form of dioramas is animated by video-mapping projections producing a set of shadows, with the soundscape of the streets of Mexico City. It offers a hallucinating and singular point of view of this exceptional and fascinating megalopolis. Inspired by the photographic work of Ed Rusha Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), Arthur Desmarteaux offers a concentrated portrait of his vision of Mexico’s essence, enabling us to grasp its greatness and dynamism. His work presents this urban landscape in a continuous but fragmented way, confronting us with the impossibility of having a global and unified vision of the city.

Jin-me Yoon est une artiste coréenne qui vit et travaille à Vancouver. Depuis les années 1980, par sa pratique de la photographie, de la vidéo et de l’installation, elle se penche sur des questions relatives à l’histoire, au lieu et au corps, mue par son intérêt pour la façon dont ces mêmes questions entretiennent des relations enchevêtrées et interdépendantes.

Jin-me Yoon is a Korean artist who lives and works in Vancouver. Since the 1980s, through her lens-based practice in photography, video, and installation, she examines questions concerning history, place, and the body, supported by an underlying interest in how these very questions are centred on entangled and interdependent relations.

Kent Monkman explore ici les thèmes et les précédents historiques de peuples des Premières Nations en Europe. Depuis l'arrivée des Européens dans les Amériques, les Autochtones ont voyagé en Europe en tant qu'ambassadeurs de leurs propres peuples, en tant que captifs, en tant qu'« artistes » de la scène et comme spécimens de zoos humains, un concept populaire au 19e siècle. Le Wild West Show de Buffalo Bill et la Gallery of the North American Indian de George Catlin mettaient tous deux en vedette des interprètes amérindiens. Monkman présente ici les débuts de Miss Chief, qui a commencé sa propre carrière en tant qu'artiste et interprète avec son ennemi juré George Catlin, avant de lancer sa propre taxinomie de l'homme européen.Parmi les représentations de Monkman des rôles joués par les Autochtones à travers diverses périodes coloniales, ce sont les œuvres vidéo qui approfondissent tout particulièrement tant le thème que le personnage de Miss Chief. Ces "tableaux-vidéo" combinent la performance, le conte et des références à l'histoire de l'art avec des arrière-plans peints où des personnages réels interagissent et existent indéfiniment.

In his series of four "video paintings", Kent Monkman explores historical precedents and themes of First Nations peoples in Europe. Since the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, Indigenous peoples traveled to Europe as embassadors for their own people, captives, performers and as specimens for human zoos, popular in the 19th century. Both Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and George Catlin's Gallery of the North American Indian featured Native American performers. Monkman constructs a back story for Miss Chief who began her own career as an artist and performer with her nemesis George Catlin before launching her own Taxonomy of the European Male. This series of video works augment the depth of theme and persona in Monkman's representations of indigenous roles across several colonialist ages. These video paintings incorporate performance, storytelling, and art-historical innuendo - with painted backgrounds where live-action characters interact and exist indefinitely.

Zanele Muholi (Afrique du Sud) s’inspire de sa propre expérience pour défendre et dévoiler l’histoire et la culture visuelle de la communauté LGBTI (lesbiennes, gais, bisexuels, transgenres et intersexués). Extraits des séries Miss D’vine (2007), Of Love and Loss (2013), Somnyama Ngonyama (2014-aujourd’hui) et Faces and Phases (2006-aujourd’hui), les portraits et les autoportraits de l’artiste sont caractérisés par un regard franc et direct. Leur puissant impact est attribuable à l’entière confiance qui y transparait et au traitement nuancé des thèmes.

Zanele Muholi (South Africa) takes inspiration from her own experience to defend and unveil the visual history of the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexed) community. Her portraits and self-portraits from the series Miss D’vine (2007), Of Love and Loss (2013), Somnyama Ngonyama (2014–current), and Faces and Phases (2006–current) are characterized by a frank and direct gaze. Their powerful impact can be attributed to the total confidence expressed in her images and the nuanced treatment of the themes.

L’exposition b.m.w.y.w. (Being Made While You Wait) de Frances Adair McKenzie nous invite à explorer un monde imaginé tout en gardant en tête la question suivante : qu’est-ce qui est en train de se fabriquer? Et celle, possiblement plus importante encore : quel sens doit-on donner au fait d’être invité à attendre? Attends-moi, salle d’attente, attendons pour voir, contre toute attente, se faire attendre, s'attendre au pire, j’en peux plus d’attendre … Tirées du quotidien, ces expressions traduisent une sorte d’animation mise en suspens, une inactivité, qui pourraient être les associations linguistiques que nous amenons avec nous face à l’œuvre.

Frances Adair McKenzie’s exhibition b.m.w.y.w. (Being Made While You Wait) invites the viewer to explore an imagined world while holding a question in their mind: What is being made? And, perhaps more importantly, what does it mean to be invited to wait? Wait for me, lay in wait, waiting room, wait-and-see, wait upon, I can’t wait… Such everyday expressions of suspended animation and inactivity may be the linguistic associations we bring with us to the work.

Depuis 2009, le festival Sight & Sound révèle le travail exceptionnel à l’esprit provocateur des artistes émergents en art numérique, réalisé à Montréal et à l’international. Sight & Sound c’est voir ce qui n’a jamais été vu, entendre ce qui n’a jamais été entendu, expérimenter l’indescriptible. C’est aussi le lieu où l’art numérique se confronte avec son agenda politique. C’est un festival qui initie les changements sociaux à travers l’art, la musique et l’esprit festif.

Since 2009, Sight & Sound Festival seeks out the best and most provocative and outstanding work of digital art currently being made by international and local emerging artists. It embraces the fringe of contemporary digital art and culture through installations, performances, workshops, interventions, and discussions. Sight & Sound is seeing the unseen and hearing the unheard. It’s experiencing the indescribable. It is where contemporary digital art meets its political agenda. It’s a festival that invites the possibility of social change through art, music, and all-night dancing.

Carnations propose une première réflexion critique sur le travail de l’artiste Philippe Hamelin. Elle interroge dans une suite d’animations de synthèse réalisées depuis 2012, la relation ambiguë entre le réel, le vivant et le numériquement construit. Des modélisations texturées de la forme humaine, animale ou organique, parfois interrompues par des formes géométriques ou par des scènes captées par vidéo, créent des univers d’une inquiétante étrangeté. Il en émane des expériences dont la qualité affective est à la fois intime et extérieure. Dans le brouillage des catégories de l’humain, du réel et du vrai, c’est ce qui ordonne l’existence elle-même et notre adhérence à ses limites, qui deviennent l’objet d’une réflexion.

Carnations embodies a first critical reflection on the work of artist Philippe Hamelin. In this series of computer-generated animations, begun in 2012, the exhibition questions the ambiguous relationship between what is real, living and digitally constructed. Textured models of human, animal and organic forms, at times interrupted by geometric shapes or videotaped scenes, make for a strange and eerie world, the viewer’s experience of which takes on an affective quality that is both intimate and distanced from it. In the hazy constellation of categories—human, real, true—it is this paradoxical quality governing existence itself and our compliance with its limits that here become the object of reflection.
