La toute dernière œuvre de Brendan Flanagan, Dense Hands, Thick Clouds (« mains denses, nuages épais »), se veut une exploration des outils de conception numérique qui sont largement utilisés aujourd’hui pour créer les médias, les objets et les éléments architecturaux qui nous entourent. Dans un processus de va-et-vient où alternent le fait main et le peaufinage à l’ordinateur, M. Flanagan s’applique à concrétiser les aspects où le numérique s’insère dans la création.
Brendan Flanagan’s latest work Dense Hands, Thick Clouds explores the tools of digital design that are now so often used to create the media, objects and architecture that surround us. Through a back and forth process of hand making and computer tweaking Flanagan attempts to concretize the areas where the digital inserts itself into creation.

Mise en œuvre par l’administration municipale de Shanghai au tournant du millénaire, l’initiative One City, Nine Towns (« neuf villes en une ») visait à prévenir l’inévitable surpopulation de la métropole. Fortement inspiré de la cité jardin de sir Ebenezer Howard, ce projet d’expansion urbaine proposait de reproduire les meilleurs attributs de pays uniques au monde, et ce, afin de créer de beaux espaces attrayants hors du centre-ville. Les styles sélectionnés étaient allemands, hollandais, italiens, espagnols, anglais, scandinaves et canadiens – les deux derniers ayant dû adopter une influence chinoise après avoir fait l’objet de critiques virulentes pour avoir permis une célébration délibérée du colonialisme. Le projet, qui visait initialement à offrir une solution de rechange unique à la surpopulation au centre-ville, s’est vu involontairement saboté par un marché spéculatif agressif. Les villes ont fini par ressembler davantage à des non espaces dont l’architecture s’apparente à des toiles de fond pour photos de mariage.
The One City, Nine Towns initiative, as devised by the Shanghai municipal government at the turn of the millennium, was meant to save the metropolis from inevitable overpopulation. Heavily influenced by Sir Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City, this urban expansion plan proposed to showcase the very best of eminent countries around the world, creating beautiful, attractive alternatives to the downtown core. The selected styles were German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, English, Scandinavian and Canadian, with the last two adopting a Chinese influence after facing heavy criticism of enabling a self-imposed celebration of colonialism. What was initially intended as a unique alternative to downtown living was unintentionally sabotaged by an aggressive speculative market, eventually bringing these towns closer to non-spaces, where the architecture often is little more than backdrops for hordes of wedding photographers.

Lac St-Anne est un documentaire audio-vidéo interactif, non linéaire et projeté sur écrans multiples. Richard Cornelisse y dresse un portrait expérientiel de Lac Sainte Anne, comté du nord de l’Alberta, au Canada. Ses descriptions de la géographie, de l’histoire et des gens de la région tiennent lieu de résidus historiques. Bien que le contenu vidéo soit principalement indirect et fluide, l’artiste tente d’y dépeindre des traces psychologiques de la terre, la relation personnelle qu’elle renferme de même que l’impression de mystère qui l’entoure. Le mélange d’histoires et d’événements vise à éveiller les sens de manière à solliciter nos connexions émotionnelles avec le lieu, les paradoxes qui le définissent ainsi que les réalités transcendantes potentielles qu’il contient.
Richard Cornelisse's Lac St-Anne is an interactive, multi-screen, non-linear audio/video documentary that depicts an experiential portrait of Lac St. Anne located in northern Alberta, Canada. The artist's depictions of the geography, history and people of this region act as historical residues. Although the artist's video depictions are largely indirect and fluid, the work attempts to illustrate psychological traces of the land, the personal relationship within it and the sense of mystery that contains it. The intertwining of histories and happenings are meant to appeal to the senses in a manner that speaks to our emotional connections to place, the paradoxes that define it and the possible transcendent realities within it.
