En 1967, l’artiste Fluxus Alison Knowles réalise The House of Dust, l’un des premiers poèmes générés par un ordinateur. Chaque quatrain commence par « Une maison en…» suivi par des permutations aléatoires de matériaux, de sites ou de situation, de sources lumineuse et de types d’habitants. En 1969, Knowles traduit l’un des quatrains sous la forme d’une architecture installée à Chelsea puis à CalArts où converge une communauté foisonnante d’artistes et d’étudiants qui y proposent des installations, performances, concerts, cours de poésie, projections de films. L’exposition présentée à la Fonderie Darling retrace l’histoire de The House of Dust et invite des artistes contemporains à s’emparer de ce poème-partition et à proposer des interprétations nouvelles.
In 1967, Fluxus artist Alison Knowles produced The House of Dust, one of the first computer-generated poems. Each quatrain began with “A house of ...” followed by random sequences of materials, sites or locations, light sources, and categories of inhabitants. In 1969, Knowles translated one of the quatrains into an architectural form, which was installed in Chelsea and then at CalArts, where a burgeoning community of artists and students were creating installations, performances, concerts, poetry courses, and film screenings. The exhibition presented at the Darling Foundry retraces the history of The House of Dust and presents contemporary artists’ new interpretations of the poem-score.

Antoine Caron, Unité d'habitation (tests)
Antoine Caron produit des œuvres sculpturales engagées politiquement et socialement. Pour l’œuvre de la Place Publique 2017, l’artiste propose de réinterpréter le concept d’unité d’habitation théorisé par Le Corbusier, en construisant un immeuble de verre dont chaque module-aquarium est habité par différentes sortes d’algues. En implantant un composant exogène (culture d’algues) à des composants préexistant (des objets récupérés dans la Fonderie Darling), l’artiste joue le rôle d’un planificateur urbain en portant un regard critique sur le phénomène de gentrification.
Antoine Caron produces politically and socially engaged sculptures. For the work in the Place Publique 2017, Caron reinterprets Le Corbusier’s concept of the unité d’habitation (living unit) by erecting a glass building in which each module (aquarium) is inhabited by a different kind of alga. By establishing an exogenous component (the growing of algae) to pre-existing components (objects gathered in the Darling Foundry), Caron plays the role of urban planner and casts a critical look at gentrification.

Depuis 10 ans, la Fonderie Darling investit chaque été une partie de la rue Ottawa pour en faire un espace d'expression artistique et de rencontres. Cette portion d'asphalte, cible d'une réappropriation citoyenne, regroupe cette année encore, de nombreux acteurs dont les quatre Universités montréalaises qui ont conceptualisé des projets tant en architecture (McGill), en art visuels (Concordia), en design de l'environnement (UQÀM), qu'en histoire de l'art (Université de Montréal). La Place Publique sera ainsi activée, tout au long de la saison, de multiples façons: par des soirées de performance initiées par la Fonderie Darling et ses partenaires (Cercle Carré, GIV, Maison de la Poésie, RIPA), par une œuvre in situ ou encore par la mise en place d'une terrasse/bar.
Every summer for the past ten years, the Darling Foundry has taken over part of Ottawa Street and transformed it into a space for gathering and artistic expression. This year, this stretch of asphalt intended for citizen appropriation brings together participants from four Montreal universities who have designed projects in architecture (McGill), art (Concordia), environmental design (UQAM), and art history (Université de Montréal). Throughout the summer season, Place Publique will be activated in various ways: a series of performances by the Darling Foundry and its partners (Cercle Carré, GIV, Maison de la Poésie, RIPA), in situ artworks, and a bar/terrace.
