Sight & Sound, c'est un festival qui, pour sa 6ème édition, va immerger son public dans un ensemble de plus de trente événements pour célébrer l’art numérique : 8 installations, 11 performances, 7 ateliers, 3 projets d’intervention publique, et 6 conférences. Science Faction est une observation vertigineuse et multiforme d’un monde en profonde mutation. Est-il légitime pour nous de dire que nous sommes témoins de ces changements? Que nous restons neutres vis-à-vis de l’évolution rapide de la technologie? Sommes-nous vigilants dans notre enthousiasme et notre acceptation de tous ces systèmes intégrés, gadgets, machines connectées en réseau, information en flux continu ?

Sight & Sound is a festival that, for its sixth edition, will immerse its public in a program comprised of over 30 events, all in the celebration of cutting edge digital art: 8 installation projects, 11 performances, 7 workshops, 3 public intervention projects, and 6 conferences. Science Faction is a dizzying and multifaceted observation of a world undergoing profound change. Is it legitimate for us to say that we are witness to this change? That we remain neutral vis-à-vis rapid technological evolution? Are we vigilant in our enthusiasm for and acceptance of integrated systems, networked gadgets, connected machines, constant information streaming?

N-Polytope est un environnement son et lumière spectaculaire combinant des technologies de pointe en matière d’éclairages, de lasers, de son, de senseurs et de logiciels d’intelligence artificielle inspirés par les œuvres radicales du compositeur Iannis Xenakis des années 1960-1970 qu’il appelait « Polytopes » (du grec poly, plusieurs et topos, espace). L’installation est guidée par un réseau de senseurs utilisant des algorithmes d’apprentissage de pointe. Les machines, qui assimilent différents motifs rythmiques et temporels produits par la lumière et le son, aident à générer une composition totalisante, viscérale, qui s’auto-organise dans le temps.

N-Polytope is a spectacular light and sound environment combining lighting, lasers, sound, sensing and artificial intelligence software technologies inspired by composer Iannis Xenakis's radical 1960s-1970s works named "Polytopes" (from the Greek poly, many and topos, space). The installation is steered through a sensor network utilizing cutting-edge machine learning algorithms which learns different rhythmic and temporal patterns produced by the light and sound and helps in generating a totalizing, visceral composition that self organizes in time.

Sight Shifting dévoile les dernières explorations créatives d’Annie Briard à la suite d’un séjour de deux ans sur la côte Ouest canadienne. Sight Shifting, exposition individuelle d’Annie Briard, porte sur la réflexion de la perception à travers des images en mouvement. En faisant appel tant aux technologies de pointe qu’aux pratiques d’une époque révolue, l’artiste conçoit des œuvres immersives qui forcent à questionner les espaces entre le visible et l’imaginaire.

“Sight Shifting” reveals Annie Briard's latest creative explorations marked by a two-year period living on the Canadian West Coast. “Sight Shifting” is a solo exhibition of moving-image investigations into perception. Using both cutting edge technologies and those from a bygone era, the artist constructs immersive moving image works that ask us to consider the spaces between the seen and the imagined.

Autant dans ses projets architecturaux qu’avec ses installations, il est toujours question, pour Jacques Bilodeau, de mettre le corps à l’épreuve – le sien, mais aussi le nôtre. Reconnu pour ses interventions architecturales d’envergure qui interrogent radicalement les présupposés déterminant la vie domestique, l’artiste conçoit également, depuis 2000, des sculptures et des installations qui invitent le spectateur à intervenir sur l’œuvre.

In both his architectural projects and art installations, Jacques Bilodeau’s primary focus is always the body – his and ours. Known for his large-scale architectural initiatives that radically challenge the assumptions defining domestic life, the artist has, since 2000, created sculptures and installations that invite spectators to immerse themselves in the piece.

Cette exposition qui présente de la vidéo, de la photographie et du textile, interroge les relations complexes que nous entretenons avec les animaux sauvages, nos attitudes anthropomorphiques ainsi que les limites auxquelles nous nous butons lorsque nous les soignons. Fleshold explore le lien unissant les êtres humains et les animaux qui séjournent dans des centres de réhabilitation de la faune. Dans un premier temps, l’artiste a cousu à la main, une série de courtepointes; chacune étant spécialement conçue pour un animal ayant été secouru. Elle les offrit ensuite aux animaux pour la durée de leur séjour auprès des humains. L’artiste cherchait à déterminer si ce geste d’amour que représente la confection d’une doudou à la main pouvait être perçu par des animaux sauvages. Ratons-laveurs, mouffettes, faons, coyotes et bien d’autres animaux reçurent ainsi une couverture confectionnée par l’artiste. Elle observa et documenta leur réaction immédiate et celle qui suivit au fil des semaines et des mois, jusqu’au moment où les animaux furent remis en liberté. Les courtepointes lui furent alors retournées.

The exhibition, featuring video, photography and textiles, examines the complexities of our anthropromorphic attitudes toward animals and the limits of what nurturing can bring to wild creatures. Fleshold is an exploration of the connection between people and animals in wildlife rehabilitation centres.To begin this project, D’Arcy hand-stitched a series of quilts, each one designed for a particular wild animal who had been rescued, and gave them to the sheltered animals for the duration of their stay in human care.The artist wanted to determine if the loving act of hand crafting security blankets could translate for wild animals, so she offered the garments to raccoons, skunks, fawns, a coyote, and many others. D’Arcy documented their immediate response to her gesture, and weeks or months later, upon the animals’ release (or passing), the quilts were returned to her.

La pratique polymorphe de Giorgia Volpe porte sur les diverses réalités du corps et de sa relation avec l’environnement. La nature de son processus créatif repose sur la récupération, l’appropriation, l'intervention et la contextualisation des objets et des matières issues de réalités du quotidien. Frontières mobiles, une installation performative qui consiste à cartographier in vivo l’espace d’Arprim au moyen d’une série de gestes et d’actions, induit sur la matière une possibilité infinie de mutations.

Giorgia Volpe’s polymorphous practice addresses various realities regarding the body and its relationship with its environment. The nature of her creative process is based on reuse, appropriation, intervention and the contextualization of everyday materials and objects. Mobile Frontiers – a performative installation that consists in an in vivo mapping of Arprim’s exhibition space using a series of movements and actions – taps into the infinite mutative possibilities of materials.

Au cœur du festival, cinq programmes d’actions animeront chaque soir dès 20h les quartiers généraux de VIVA! pour faire découvrir au public des pratiques éclectiques, vibrantes et déroutantes. Les quatre premières soirées seront suivies de Tableau Noir, une plateforme expérimentale qui invite la communauté VIVA! à investir spontanément l’espace du Bain St-Michel. Le dimanche, dernière journée du festival, le public est invité à monter à bord d’une navette en direction de Laval, où Verticale – centre d’artistes propose une programmation d’artistes de la relève.

At the heart of the festival, five evenings of action art programming will occupy the VIVA! headquarters and fill the pool as of 8pm, introducing the public to a variety of eclectic, vibrant and disruptive practices. The first four programs will be followed by Tableau Noir, an open-ended experimental platform dedicated to spontaneous actions by artists and members of the VIVA! community. On the final day of the festival, Verticale – centre d’artistes invites the public to jump aboard a shuttle bus heading to Laval for an afternoon program of performance by local emerging artists.

Les drones prolongent les capacités visuelles du corps. L’œil a une position fixe sur le corps, une vision limitée à longue distance et diminuée dans de mauvaises conditions d’éclairage. Les drones peuvent se rendre à des endroits dangereux et éloignés, et peuvent voir même par faible luminosité. On peut les contrôler et les opérer à distance, et les faire fonctionner automatiquement. Dotés d’un mode de détection artificielle, ils semblent être capables d’intention et d’action. Les drones sont les robots de la vision. Au cours des quarante dernières années, l’appareil photo a adopté certaines caractéristiques des drones, à tel point qu’il a maintenant sa propre vie et fonctionne davantage comme un ordinateur. Il n’est plus nécessaire de regarder par le viseur, puisque le temps de pose est calculé automatiquement. L’appareil peut être ajusté pour saisir des images sans qu’il soit nécessaire d’être derrière lui. Avec les détecteurs de mouvement, les contrôles à distance, la télévision en circuit fermé, la webcam, Google Street View et le développement de la robotique, l’appareil photo peut fonctionner sans intervention humaine.

Drone: The Automated Image is a project charting the changing relationship between the camera and the human body. It looks at how photographers and artists are using the automatic devices of the camera in its many different forms in the production of their work. Drones extend the capabilities of the body in the act of looking. The eye has a fixed position on the human body, has limited vision over long distances, and does not work well in reduced lighting conditions. Drones can travel to difficult and remote locations, they can see at all times even in limited light. They can be controlled remotely and be operated from a distance; they can function automatically, have artificial sensing, and also convey a sense that they have an intent or agency of their own. Drones are the robots of seeing. Over the last 40 years the camera has taken on some of the same characteristics of the drone, even to the extent that the camera now has a life of its own and functions more like a computer. There is no need to look through the viewfinder because all the calculations for exposure and focus are automatically completed. You can set the camera to take photographs without the need to be behind it. With motion detectors, remote controls, CCTV, webcams, Google Street View, and the development of robotics, the camera can function without human involvement. Drone : l’image automatisée est un projet qui vise à cartographier la relation en constante mutation entre l’appareil photo et le corps humain. Il examine la manière dont les photographes et les artistes utilisent les mécanismes automatiques de l’appareil sous toutes ses formes dans leur production artistique.
