Près de 80 artistes nationaux et internationaux réunis au 8e festival d’art numérique, nous invitent à une réflexion critique sur les thèmes de l’économie de partage et de la consommation collaborative par le biais de performances, d’ateliers, d’installations et de conférences. Le festival regroupe chaque année des artistes établis et émergents, et s’assure de donner une place équitable aux femmes artistes.
Le 30 septembre, le public pourra aussi savourer l’une des rares performances de Thomas Bégin [CA]. L’artiste présentera Larsen Surf, un système de musique construit à partir de guitares et de basses électriques, d’amplificateurs, de haut-parleurs et de cordes, qui développe et maintient de complexes boucles sonores. Sa présentation sera suivie de celle de Morphist, du duo Chdh [FR]. Inédite au Canada, cette performance se base sur la manipulation d’une substance composée d'une myriade de particules abstraites et mathématiques, dont chaque altération est transposée en son et en image.
Nearly 80 Canadian and international artists converge at the 8th international digital art festival, inviting critical reflection regarding issues of the sharing economy and collaborative consumption through performances, workshops, installations, and panel discussions. Each year, the festival brings established and emerging artists to the stage, and ensures equal visibility is given to women artists.
On September 30th, the public can also enjoy a rare performance by Thomas Bégin [CA]. The artist will present Larsen Surf, a music system created from electronic guitars and bass guitars, amplifiers, speakers, and strings, which self-regulates, creating and maintaining complex sound loops. His presentation will be followed by Morphist, from the French duo Chdh [FR]. Never before shown in Canada, the performance is based on the manipulation of a collection of various abstract and mathematic particles transposed in sound and image.
Sept installations seront offertes au public, dont la célèbre Print Wikipedia, de Michael Mandiberg [US]. Le logiciel inventé par l’artiste prépare des sections entières de contenu de Wikipedia pour une impression en ouvrages reliés à couverture cartonnée. Cette œuvre poétique met en perspective la taille de l'encyclopédie Wikipedia et l'impossibilité d’en fixer la forme : chaque volume imprimé est déjà périmé.
Sight & Sound présentera aussi l’œuvre Daily Paywall, de Paolo Circo [IT], qui a soulevé la controverse en s’appropriant par piratage des centaines de milliers d'articles provenant de la section payante (paywall) des sites Web du Wall Street Journal, du Financial Times et du Economist, entre autres. L’artiste les a ensuite redistribués gratuitement, en offrant une rémunération aux lecteurs et aux auteurs.
Au Site Outremont, les visiteurs pourront parcourir deux installations alliant les plantes à l’univers numérique. Dans Planthropy, Stephanie Rothenberg [US] crée des interactions entre plantes et messages Twitter, tandis que Craig Fahner [CA] les relie aux jeux vidéo compétitifs dans Pure Water Touching Clear Sky.
Le festival mettra aussi en vedette trois autres installations : Networked Optimization (300 wpm), par Sebastian Schmieg [DE] et Silvio Lorusso [IT], Laborers of Love / LOL, par Stephanie Rothenberg et Jeff Crouse [US], et Social Turkers, par Lauren McCarthy [US].
Le samedi 1er octobre, l’artiste réputé Aaron David Ross [US] sera le clou d’une soirée festive organisée par le label de musique PAN, avec sa performance Deceptionista qui participe à la fois de l’album, du jeu vidéo et du spectacle en direct. Au rythme de sa propre musique, l’artiste retransmettra en temps réel des extraits de vidéos provenant du site Web Vine pour créer une expérience audiovisuelle immersive. Sa performance sera précédée des spectacles de Ramzi [CA] et du musicien Simon Chioini [CA].
Art Hack Day - Pendant 48 heures, du vendredi 30 septembre au dimanche 2 octobre, 40 artistes numériques et hackers se réuniront à Eastern Bloc pour le Art Hack Day. Dans ce laboratoire, ils créeront des œuvres sur les thèmes du festival : l’économie de partage et la consommation collaborative. Cette exploration des processus de création culminera par une exposition éclair (flash exhibition) présentée le dimanche soir à Eastern Bloc et accompagnée d’un barbecue gratuit pour les visiteurs.
Regards sur les économies collaboratives - Trois conférences auront lieu à Temps libre sur les thèmes de l’économie solidaire, de l’économie du partage et de l’économie du savoir. Plus de 10 conférenciers issus de l’univers académique, du monde des affaires et de la sphère artistique prendront la parole, dont Jacqueline Mabey, Sian K. Evans et Michael Mandiberg, fondatrices et fondateur du collectif Art+Feminism, le sociologue Francis Fortier et Christine Renaud, fondatrice de la plateforme d’éducation collaborative E-180.
Enfin, artistes et membres du public peuvent dès maintenant faire l’expérience de Tr(AI)de, un système d’échange informatique développé par Thomas Ouellet Fredericks [CA], Patrick Sébastien Coulombe [CA] et Sylvain Le Beux [FR/CA]. Le système se base sur un algorithme qui détermine quelles personnes seront incluses dans l’échange et comment les objets seront échangés, en partant du principe qu’une personne obtiendra toujours un article qu’elle préfère à celui qu’elle offre. La population et les participants au festival sont invités dès maintenant à offrir des pièces électroniques, des dispositifs, des instruments ou des objets d'art au http://mathtrade.io.
Un festival, trois sites - Le festival Sight & Sound est organisé depuis 8 ans à Montréal par le centre Eastern Bloc, qui favorise la diffusion, la production et la promotion de l’art numérique au Québec. Depuis 2007, le centre de production et d’exposition Eastern Bloc se situe à l’avant-garde en matière de diffusion, de production et de promotion de l’art numérique au Québec. Le centre soutient particulièrement l’expérimentation créatrice dans les domaines croisés de l’art, de la technologie et de la science ainsi que toute pratique émergente numérique, en favorisant l’hybridité et les nouveaux modes de production. Eastern Bloc soutient la communauté artistique de la relève en organisant des échanges créatifs entre artistes émergents et artistes établis dans le cadre d’initiatives de diffusion à l’échelle locale, nationale et internationale. Il facilite la participation du public, la démocratisation technologique et la mise en valeur de l’espace urbain au sein de projets d’intervention publique. L’organisme s’efforce de défendre un point de vue critique sur les évolutions des pratiques artistiques et technologiques émergentes.
Seven installation projects will be presented to the public, including the now famous Print Wikipedia, by Michael Mandiberg [US]. Software invented by the artist prepares entire volumes of Wikipedia content to be printed in hardcover structure. This poetic work puts into perspective the scale of the Wikipedia encyclopaedia as well as its inability to take stable form: each volume once printed is already outdated.
Sight & Sound will also present the work Daily Paywall, by Paolo Circo [IT], who raised controversy by appropriating thousands of articles from the websites of the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and The Economist by hacking their paywall systems. The artist then redistributed the articles for free, offering compensation to readers and authors.
At the Outremont site of the festival, visitors can browse two installations that explore the relationship between plants and the digital universe. In Planthropy, Stephanie Rothenberg [US] creates interactions between plants and Twitter messages, while Craig Fahner [CA] connects plants to competitive video games in Pure Water Touching Clear Sky.
The festival will also feature three other installations: Networked Optimization (300 wpm) by Sebastian Schmieg [DE] and Silvio Lorusso [IT], Laborers of Love/LOL by Stephanie Rothenberg and Jeff Crouse [US] and Social Turkers, by Lauren McCarthy [US].
On Saturday, October 1st, renowned artist Aaron David Ross [US] will be the highlight at an event featuring Berline-based record label PAN, with his performance Deceptionista, which simultaneously merges an album, a video game, and a live-feed from the Internet. To the rhythm of his own music, the artist will broadcast live video excerpts taken from Vine to create an immersive audio/visual experience. His performance will be preceded by those of Ramzi [CA] and Simon Chioini [CA].
Art Hack Day - For 48 hours, from Friday, September 30th to Sunday, October 2nd, 40 digital artists and hackers will gather at Eastern Bloc for Art Hack Day. During this collective laboratory, the participants will create works revolving around the themes of the festival: the sharing economy and collaborative consumption. This exploration of creative processes will culminate in a flash exhibition presented on Sunday night at Eastern Bloc, accompanied by a free BBQ for visitors.
Collaborative economies: a critical dialogue - Three panel discussions will be held at Temps libre exploring the themes of the solidarity economy, the sharing economy and the knowledge economy. More than ten speakers from academic institutions, start-up culture, and the art world will speak, including founders of the collective Art+Feminism, Jacqueline Mabey, Sian Evans, and Michael Mandiberg, sociologist Francis Fortier, and founder and CEO of the collaborative education platform E-180, Christine Renaud.
Finally, artists and members of the public can now experience Tr(AI)de, an automated system of information and equipment exchange developed by Thomas Ouellet Fredericks [CA], Patrick Sébastien Coulombe [CA] and Sylvain Le Beux [FR/CA]. The system is based on an algorithm that determines which people will be included in the exchange and how objects will be exchanged, based on the assumption that a person will always receive an item that he or she prefers to the one being given away. The public and the participants of the festival are now invited to offer electronic equipment, devices, instruments and art objects at http://mathtrade.io.

Since 2007, Eastern Bloc has been at the forefront in terms of distribution, production and promotion of digital art in Quebec. The centre supports especially creative experimentation in the cross fields of art, technology and science as well as any emerging digital practice. Hybridity and new modes of production are at its core, as well as offering support to the arts community and encouraging creative exchange between emerging and established artists, with distribution initiatives on both local and international levels. Eastern Bloc facilitates public participation, technological democratization and the value of urban space within public intervention projects. While supporting innovation through emerging artistic and technological practices, the organisation hopes to defend a critical viewpoint on all these developments.
