L’exposition examine l’impact de la photo The Rebel (« la rebelle ») de Shelley Niro. Véritable icône de l’histoire de l’art autochtone canadien, ce portrait dépeint la mère de l’artiste souriant gaiement, vêtue de façon décontractée et étendue comme une « pin‑up » sur le coffre de la voiture familiale, une AMC Rebel d’époque. Selon les conservatrices Lori Beavis et Rhonda Meier, cette image a marqué un tournant dans la politique de l’autoreprésentation autochtone et elle a influencé les générations subséquentes. Elles ont sélectionné dix autres artistes canadiens dont l’œuvre s’inspire de l’emblématique photo. Chacun d’eux aborde de son propre point de vue critique en tant qu'autochtone la problématique de la représentation dans le contexte politique tendu du pays. L’exposition permet ainsi de revisiter le débat sur les questions de représentation, de stéréotype et d’identité.
This exhibition explores the impact of The Rebel, a photograph by Shelley Niro. Now iconic in the history of Canadian Indigenous art, it captures Niro’s mother casually dressed and grinning mirthfully, reclined like a pin-up girl on the trunk of the family car, a vintage Rebel. Curators Lori Beavis and Rhonda Meier argue that The Rebel marked a key moment in the politics of Indigenous self-representation, and was influential for generations to come. In addition to Niro, they have selected ten artists from across Canada whose work has been influenced by The Rebel. Each addresses the problematics of representation from their critical positions as Aboriginal people within the charged Canadian political landscape. The exhibition thus provides the opportunity to discuss issues of representation, stereotypes, and identity in a revitalized way.
Table ronde: dans le cadre d’une conversation sur les enjeux en matière de photographie multigénérationnelle, Shelley Niro, Skawennati et Dayna Danger partageront leurs idées et leurs expériences avec les conservatrices de l’exposition et le public.
À l’occasion du vernissage de l’exposition The Rebel Yells (« le cri rebelle »), l’artiste de performance Lori Blondeau, qui vit à Saskatoon, présentera une nouvelle œuvre. Intitulée My Sister...My Love (« Ma sœur...mon amour »), la performance rendra hommage à la fois à Shelley Niro, à son œuvre et à sa célèbre photographie de 1987, The Rebel (« la rebelle »).
The round table will be a conversation on issues surrounding multigenerational photography. Shelley Niro, Skawennati, and Dayna Danger will share insights and experiences with the exhibition curators and the audience.
Saskatoon-based performance artist, Lori Blondeau will present her new work, My Sister...My Love at the opening of the exhibition. Created especially for this exhibition, this performance will be an homage to Shelley Niro, her oeuvre and her iconic photograph The Rebel (1987).
