En collaboration avec Cinema out of the Box! Pour l’évènement, non seulement les images, mais aussi les visiteur-euse-s de la galerie, sont en mouvement. Ces dernier-ère-s doivent pédaler sur un vélo stationnaire pour faire fonctionner les vidéoprojecteurs, transformant ainsi leur énergie en lumière. L’effort en vaut la peine : une collection de 13 vidéos réalisées par huit artistes internationaux s’inspirent de l’univers scientifique et explorent le système solaire, zooment à travers le microcosmos, transforment le son en visuel, et représentent des principes mathématiques.
In collaboration with Cinema out of the Box! At this event not only are the pictures moving, but so are the gallery visitors. To make the video projector work gallery visitors must peddle on a stationary bicycle, turning their energy into light. The effort will be worth it: the collection of 13 science-inspired art videos by eight international artists explores the solar system, zooms into the microcosmos, turns sound into sight, and visualizes mathematic principles.
Quelques précisions sur la sélection : seront projetés trois films de Charles Lindsay, premier artiste en résidence à l’institut SETI. Intitulés CARBON I, II et III, les courts-métrages ont été conçus à l’aide d’un dispositif d’imagerie en carbone inventé par Lindsay lui-même, pour lequel il reçu une bourse Guggenheim en 2010. Le film Black Rain par le duo d’artistes britanniques Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman et Joe Gerhardt) nous transporte en orbite autour du soleil. Les deux artistes ont utilisé des images collectées par les satellites jumeaux STEREO en mission solaire qui ont enregistré des données visuelles sur les éjections de masse coronale et le vent solaire. L’approche créative unique de Semiconductor leur a permis de remporter la bourse de recherche artistique allouée par Smithsonian ainsi que la bourse de la NASA Space Sciences. L’artiste australien Andy Thomas travaille avec des données récupérées à l’Institut Néerlandais pour l’Audiovisuel. Ses animations hypnotiques Nightingale and Canary et Bird Echoes sont des abstractions 3D de particules en mouvement réagissant au son des cris d’oiseaux.
La sélection de film mise en boucle, choisie par la galeriste Bettina Forget, dure environ une demi-heure. Chacun des films ne dépasse pas 3 à 6 minutes, ce qui vous évitera de pédaler trop longtemps. Le mobile Cinema out of the Box! a été développé par le Moving Image Research Lab de l’université McGill ainsi que par le Sustainability Project Fund qui encourage des « expériences cinématographiques » originales et inattendues. Le Lab a développé une infrastructure portable pour un cinéma mobile équipé de manière écologique et durable. Après l’été 2014 passé dans différents parcs de Montréal, et même une nocturne au cimetière, la Visual Voice Gallery est ravie d’accueillir cet hiver pendant deux semaines ce cinéma.
Le festival de courts-métrages Art+Science in Motion a lieu à la Visual Voice Gallery, de 12h à 17h30 du mercredi au samedi.
Highlights from the reel include three films by Charles Lindsay, the first artist in residence at the SETI Institute. Titled CARBON I, II, and III, the short films were created with a carbon-based imaging process Lindsay invented, for which he received a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship. The film Black Rain by UK artist duo Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt) transports us into the orbit around the Sun . The artists worked with images collected by the twin satellite solar mission STEREO, which captured visual data of solar wind and coronal mass ejections. Semiconductor’s unique creative approach has won them the Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship and NASA Space Sciences Fellowship. Australian artist Andy Thomas works with data from the Netherland’s Institute for Sound and Vision. His mesmerizing animations Nightingale and Canary and Bird Echoes are particle-driven 3D abstractions reacting to the sound of bird calls.
The total length of the looped reel, which was curated by gallery owner Bettina Forget, is about half-hour. Each film is between 3 and 6 minutes long, which means you don’t have to commit to pedalling for long stretches of time. The mobile Cinema out of the Box! was developed by McGill University’s Moving Image Research Lab to encourage ‘cinematic experiences’ in new and unexpected ways. The Lab focuses on developing a portable infrastructure for a mobile cinema and to equip it in an ecological and sustainable way. The cinema spent the summer months of 2014 in various Montreal parks, even a night in the cemetery, and Visual Voice Gallery is delighted to have it spend two weeks in its gallery space this winter.
The Art+Science in Motion short film festival takes place at Visual Voice Gallery, Wednesday to Saturday from noon until 5:30pm.
