For Le Studio Show, Jonathan Haydock is exhibiting a collection of photo-based works, each composed from images taken from nature, that are themselves a combination of manipulated, exaggerated and patiently made constructions. Snapshot depicts a vista of forgotten industry from a national park in the north of England. The image itself, taken on a low-resolution point-and-shoot camera, becomes heavily pixilated when enlarged to its present size, visibly revealing its digital composure. Printed across hundreds of photographs, the view, at once impressive, loses all significance within its new context and what is left is an exaggerated portrait of experience and reality.
The work LandSlideShow is a durational video that runs for twelve hours, rigorously introducing each and every coloured pixel from a single landscape photograph. Within this display of indefinable detail the scene of nature is lost and forgotten, whilst in its place a far more complex vision is depicted. Human beliefs in nature such as beauty, history and adventure are disregarded, and a new realism is revealed through the machine’s patient dedication to digital exploration at its most thorough.
The collection of sculptural works scattered about the gallery call to mind topographical maps. Produced with the use of a digital scanner pressed against various terrains, the sequence of scans is then pieced together into a single print. As life size representations of land, these works render themselves useless as tools of practical navigation, but instead create models for vast new landscapes, which call for an alternative consideration of relationships to nature.
