Where can you find twinkling bugs and mechanical pets without going to the space jungle? Given life by Concordia undergraduate students, the festival aims to promote the creative power of Concordia students and brings together 13 venues throughout the city. The Art Matters festival desires to be as inclusive as possible showcasing all mediums and a variety of themes. The studio is a working space, where Concordia art students and alumni create. For the occasion of Art Matters, this working space has been turned into an exhibition space.
With six emerging Concordia artists represented in Nature/Culture, the diversity of mediums, forms and intellectual perspectives is rich. Basing their inspiration in scientific images, the human body, or their own experiences these artists try to understand, critic and challenge the attitude that humans have towards the natural environment. Through sound-making books, twinkling bugs and a mechanical fur sculpture, to name only a few, the exhibition aims to creates an aesthetic space of reflection. In addition it is a testimony to the emergence of trans-disciplinary collaboration between artistic disciplines but also science and technology this exhibition invites you to participate in the study of nature, human nature and the relationship in between.
According to biologist Jonas Salk “If all insects on Earth disappeared, within 50 years all life on Earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the Earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish.” With this quote in mind, come take a peek at the world through the eyes of these artists and decide for yourself.
