Avec l’installation Nouveaux Troglodytes, l’artiste torontois Philippe Blanchard aborde l’animation sous une forme audiovisuelle immersive. L’espace, occupé par des sculptures tapissées de papier sérigraphié, est éclairé par des stroboscopes et des projecteurs synchronisés à une trame sonore ambiante¹. Les sérigraphies ainsi illuminées s’animent sous l’alternance du spectre lumineux des lampes rouges, vertes et bleues.

With the installation New Troglodytes, Toronto-based artist Philippe Blanchard approaches animation through immersive audio-visual systems. Sculptures wrapped in screen-printed paper occupy a space lit with strobe lights and projectors that have been synchronised with the ambient soundtrack¹. Thus lit, the printed surfaces come to life, alternately reacting with the light spectrum of the red, green, and blue lamps.

 

Cette installation animée contourne les moyens de la projection vidéo pour évoquer la symbolique de la caverne et du feu, pouvant être perçue comme forme préhistorique des technologies lumineuses et visuelles, voire comme forme archétypale de l’animation. Blanchard aborde celle-ci comme médium en la dotant d’une dimension tactile et événementielle au-delà des limites de l’écran. Son caractère fondamentalement merveilleux et magique se révèle pour proposer une réflexion sur l’omniprésence de l’image en mouvement dans notre quotidien et notre accoutumance à celle-ci.

Lors de Nuit blanche à Montréal, ARPRIM accueille le public pour une performance musicale : les lampes stroboscopiques, et par conséquent l’animation de l’installation, seront synchronisées en direct aux rythmes de musiciens montréalais, dont Drainolith, Hobo Cubes et The World Provider.

Philippe Blanchard est un artiste multidisciplinaire torontois oeuvrant en animation, sérigraphie et installation. Il a étudié les beaux-arts et le cinéma à l’Université Concordia (BFA, 1998) et à l’Ontario College of Art & Design University (MFA, 2010). Ses vidéos et installations ont été diffusés au Canada, en Amérique du Nord et en Europe. Philippe Blanchard enseigne l'animation à l'OCAD University. L’artiste remercie le Conseil des arts du Canada et le Conseil des arts de l’Ontario.

ARPRIM a pour mission de diffuser les pratiques actuelles liées aux arts imprimés. Il aborde l’imprimé comme un média ouvert, mobile, social et accessible. Il se définit comme un espace d’essai et d’expérience propice au développement d’une vision pluraliste de l’art imprimé.

 

This animated installation bypasses the typical means of video projection to concentrate on creating a fire-lit, cave-like environment reminiscent of the prehistoric form of today’s luminous and visual technologies; a place where animation rekindles with its archetypal form. Blanchard uses this as a media by augmenting it with a tactile and experiential dimension that spills beyond the boundaries of the screen. The fundamentally mesmerizing and magical character of the installation guides the spectator towards reflections about the ubiquity of the moving image in our daily lives, as well as our habituation to it.

During Montreal’s Nuit blanche, ARPRIM invites the public to a musical performance: the strobe lights, and consequently the animation and installation, will be synchronised live with the rhythms of Montreal musicians such as Drainolith, Hobo Cubes and The World Provider.

Philippe Blanchard is a Torontonian multidisciplinary artist working in animation, screen printing and installation. He completed fine arts and film studies in Concordia University (BFA, 1998) and in the Ontario College of Art & Design University (MFA, 2010). His videos and installations have been showcased across Canada, North America and Europe. Philip Blanchard now teaches animation at OCAD University.
