The exhibition Unfold explores notions of time, duration and vulnerability. It features Justine Skahan’s recent paintings and drawings. One of the main bodies of work in the show, Unfinished house, is based on a television news story about a house in Winnipeg that has been under construction for 24 years. Painting and drawing slow time down, thus providing a quiet framework for reflection. This work is slow and quiet, even though it is often instigated by bright moving images from television, cinema and pop culture. This interpretation of the subjects of our mass visual culture is a way to meditate on them and freeze moments that merit a closer look.
Justine Skahan is a Montreal based artist, with an interest in painting and drawing. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and has had the opportunity to co-curate several group shows. Skahan co-runs studio 427, the studio-come-gallery space in Montreal’s well-known Belgo building and is also an active member of articule – a local artist-run centre. She has volunteered at numerous artist-run centres and festivals. She holds a degree in Studio Arts from Concordia University (2010).
