Kevin McDermott, fully self-taught, pushes the limits of stencil art by creating complex, multilayered pieces. He incorporates various techniques which aren’t normally associated with this art form. Stencil making consists of taking an image and accentuating the contrast between light and dark in order to print and cut it out. Finally, the stencil is spray painted over leaving only the light or shadow part. Consciously, Kevin disposes of a stencil immediately after having used it once in order for the end product to remain an exclusive and never duplicated piece.
Sub V has graciously invited Kevin back for a second time and, for the occasion, he will be showcasing his most recent work, which demonstrates expressive color contrasts, breaking away from his muted palette. Kevin has always been fascinated by the underdog. The featured piece in this expo is “POV,” which uses color and focus contrasts to display the point of view of a person resigned to sleeping in the streets. As well, it accentuates the character’s value in comparison to his ephemeral material surroundings.
Kevin has called upon three of Quebec’s most sought after instrumental hip-hop producers to provide the soundtrack for the evening. Guests in attendance will be blessed to experience the musical creations of KenLo Craqnuques [Alaclair Ensemble, Movezerbe], V-Looper and Maxime Robin. There will also be a raffle in which a portrait of indie hip-hop icon Slug from Atmosphere will be up for grabs.
