Departure met en relation le travail photographique et vidéo de trois jeunes artistes : Matthew Hood, Flavia Majlis et Hans Ning, sous le commissariat de Marisa Portolese. La famille et la relation complexe parent/enfant constituent le thème commun de ces œuvres. Au travers d'une lentille autobiographique, elles soulignent les difficultés reliées à l'abandon, au changement et à la mortalité maternelle.
Dans Love Me/Love me Not, Flavia Majlis raconte comment le départ de son mari a perturbé sa vie familiale. Une série de photographies et de vidéos construisent un portrait psychologique de cette séparation soudaine et imprévue à travers la voix et les réflexions de Chloé, sa fille âgée de quatre ans. Les images de Matthew Hood, issues de la série Mum and Me, revisitent la relation de l'artiste avec sa mère à travers des objets, devenus artefacts de ses souvenirs d'enfance. La série Fatherhood de Hans Ning est non seulement inspirée par son nouveau rôle de parent, mais aussi par l'abandon de son propre père alors que l'artiste était encore enfant. Dans ses images proches du tableau, Hans Ning réinvente sa relation avec son père en créant des moments qu'il aurait souhaité vivre avec ce dernier. Ses trames narratives nous transportent également dans la relation qu'il partage maintenant avec sa fille. À travers le regard de l'enfant et du parent, cette exposition explore les expériences propres à l'absence, à la séparation et à l'impossibilité de communiquer.
Curated by Marisa Portolese, Departure is an exhibition that brings together the photographic and video work of three young artists Matthew Hood, Flavia Majlis and Hans Ning. Focusing on family and the complex relationship between parent and child, the works in this exhibition are created through an autobiographical lens to highlight issues relating to abandonment, displacement and maternal mortality.
In Love Me/Love me Not, Flavia Majlis deals with how her husband's decision to leave her has disrupted her family life. In a series of compelling videos and photographs, she depicts a psychological portrait of this sudden and unexpected separation through the voice and thoughts of her four-year old daughter Chloe. In Matthew Hood's images from the commemorative series Mum and Me, the artist revisits his relationship with his late mother through emblematic objects that have remained as significant artifacts of his childhood memories. Hans Ning's tableaux style series Fatherhood is not only inspired by his new role as a parent, but also by his relationship with his father who abandoned him at a very young age. Hans Ning uses a sensitive approach in his narrative based imagery to convey and recreate experiences he wishes he had with his own father and the bond he now shares with his daughter. Through the perspective of either child or parent, ideas alluding to absence, death, separation and the failure to communicate are explored in this exhibition.
Biographies :
Matthew Hood est né et a grandi à Montréal. Sa pratique artistique est basée sur la photographie et le documentaire. Il a présenté son travail dans plusieurs expositions de groupe et individuelles. Matthew Hood a étudié en communications et en cinéma avant d'obtenir un Baccalauréat en beaux-arts avec une majeure en photographie de l'Université Concordia.
Flavia Majlis est née à Buenos Aires en Argentine et a grandi au Brésil et en Italie. Elle vit et travaille à Montréal où elle a obtenu un Baccalauréat en beaux-arts avec une majeure en photographie de l'Université Concordia. Flavia Majlis a exposé dans plusieurs expositions individuelles et de groupe.
Hans Ning, artiste canadien d'origine chinoise, vit et travaille à Montréal. Il a exposé son travail dans plusieurs expositions de groupes et a terminé un Baccalauréat en beaux-arts avec une majeure en photographie à l'Université Concordia.
Marisa Portolese a réalisé plusieurs projets photographiques qui ont été très favorablement reçus par la critique. Elle a exposé au Canada, en Europe et aux États-Unis. Son travail a fait l'objet d'analyse dans des publications telles que Candian Art, Border Crossings, Ciel Variable, ETC Montréal et plusieurs autres journaux, magazines et périodiques. Les éditions Dazibao ont aussi publié un catalogue sur ses photographies et ses œuvres sont présentes dans plusieurs collections publiques et privées. Elle est récipiendaire de plusieurs bourses du Conseil des Arts du Canada et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Marisa Portolese est professeur de photographie à l'Université Concordia et est représentée par la galerie Lilian Rodriguez à Montréal.
Biographies:
Matthew Hood was born and raised in Montreal. His artistic practice is photographic and documentary based. He has also exhibited in an array of group and solo shows in Montreal. Matthew Hood's background is in Cinema and Communications, and he just completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a Major in Photography, at Concordia University.
Flavia Majlis was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Brazil and Italy. She is currently living and working in Montreal, where she just completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a Major in Photography, at Concordia University. Flavia Majlis has exhibited in Montreal in various group and solo shows.
Hans Ning is a Canadian born artist of Chinese descent who lives and works in Montreal. He has shown his work in Montreal in a selection of group shows and has just completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a major in Photography, at Concordia University.
Marisa Portolese has produced many photographic projects, which have received critical acclaim. She has exhibited widely in Canada, Europe and the United States. Alongside her exhibition record, critics have written about her work in publications such as Canadian Art, Border Crossings, Ciel Variable, ETC Montreal, as well as other journals, magazines, newspapers and periodicals. In addition, Dazibao publications published a book of her photographs. She is the recipient of several awards and numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Her work is part of private and public collections. Marisa Portolese is also a professor in the Photography program at Concordia University and is represented by the Gallery Lilian Rodriguez in Montreal.
