oeuvres des diplômés de l'année 1995 du programme des arts plastiques du Collège Dawson | 1995 Fine Arts Graduating Class Exhibition and Reunion
On October 29, 1995, Bob Ross, the calmly reassuring television painter passed away but the next morning most people were thinking about the Quebec referendum and wondering how they would vote that day. At work, the “kids” were painting away in their new studios, and as always, seemingly oblivious to the day’s events. So what else happened that year? Paul Bernardo’s trial and conviction, OJ Simpson’s innocent verdict, a deadly terrorist action in Oklahoma and the assassination of Israel’s Yitzhak Rabin. Our students were watching Seinfeld and Mel Gibson was the star of the day, winning best director and movie of the year. We know all of this because of the Internet but 1995 was only the second year that we taught Computer art - Windows 95 was just being introduced, Sony sold its first PlayStation and Netscape went public launching the .com bubble. Children born that year are presently working on their portfolios to get into the Dawson Fine Arts Program.
It was the Internet that began this project. A couple of years ago, a former Dawson Fine Arts student, Erin Fabac, launched a group, The Class of 1995 on Facebook. Alumni networked and the idea of an exhibition slowly evolved. Remarkably, most of the class of ’95 generously communicated news of their life. From this group of Fine Arts graduates, there are artists, teachers, filmmakers, architects, psychologists, businesspeople, mothers and fathers. As in any reunion, some had to decline from participating because of distance or other obligations. One of the most interesting responses came from Zoë Bridgman, a noted professional photographer, who said, “Unfortunately I don’t think I will be able to participate at the show ... I just gave birth to our first child - a little girl last week and am just getting sorted out with a new little person to take care of”.
The nine artists that are exhibiting are a pretty good indication of how fortunate we are to be continually chosen by talented students as the school of choice. These individuals are typical of the groups of students that we continually have the pleasure to work with. I think that the real secret of success in the Fine Arts Program is that we collectively appreciate each and every student that passes through these studios and classrooms for the extraordinary creators and contributors to society that they are. - Andres Manniste, March 2010The organizers of this exhibition wish to thank all the individuals who generously contributed to the event. A special thank you goes to the following people: Robert Kavanagh, Academic Dean; Andréa Cole, Dean of Creative & Applied Arts; Lorraine Simms and the Fine Arts Department; Helen Wawrzetz; Erin Fabac Holmes; Anna Persichilli.
