Le mot islandais loftslag signifie climat, mais on pourrait également le traduire par « chant de l’air » puisque loft signifie air et lag, chant. L’exposition Loftslag est une ode au littoral d’Islande, laquelle prend la forme d’une installation à trois canaux. Elle raconte, en trois parties, l’histoire de forces incontrôlables. Sur des murs distincts, des projecteurs montrent trois vidéos : Avec The Nine Windows [Les neuf fenêtres], des nuages parcourent un ciel bleu clair, les lumières et les ombres changent, présageant ce qui adviendra. The Benefit of Doubt [Le bénéfice du doute] exprime la force dangereuse et énigmatique de la mer. The Birds of a Feather [Des oiseaux semblables] montre l’aile d’une mouette morte. Alors que des voitures circulent, les plumes dansent au vent. Le son du vent et des automobiles calque celui de l’océan. Avec cette exposition, l’artiste islandais Óskar Ericsson met en scène une source vitale qui, depuis des siècles, est une inspiration poétique pour son pays natal.

The Icelandic word “loftslag” means “climate” but could also be interpreted as “air song” from the words loft meaning air and lag which means song. Loftslag is an ode to the Icelandic coast and is presented as a three channel video installation. It tells a story of uncontrollable forces in three parts. Three videos are displayed with video projectors on three separate walls: In The Nine Windows clouds drift by on a clear blue sky, the lights and shadows change, predicting what is yet to come. The Benefit of Doubt expresses the hazardous and enigmatic power that the sea possesses. The Birds of a Feather shows a single wing of a dead seagull. The feathers dance in the wind as cars drive by. The sound of the wind and the cars mimic the sound of the ocean. With this exhibition, Icelandic artist Óskar Ericsson illustrates a vital source that has been a poetic inspiration to his home country for centuries.

Habitant en Islande, l’artiste Óskar Ericsson (1979) est né et a été élevé en Hollande; il a émigré à l’âge de onze ans à Reykjavik, en Islande. Il détient un baccalauréat en arts médiatiques de l’AKI en Hollande, obtenu en 2007. Après avoir résidé à Montréal pendant une année, il est retourné en Islande avant le grand effondrement financier de 2008. Óskar utilise la vidéo et la cinétique pour donner forme à des méditations subtiles. Il est sincèrement passionné par l’autosuffisance, le synchronisme et l’altruisme. Lorsqu’il ne produit pas d’œuvres d’art, il aime cuisiner, faire des randonnées pédestres et écouter de vieux albums d’Otis Redding.

Icelandic time-based artist Óskar Ericsson (1979) was born and raised in Holland and emigrated at the age of 11 to Reykjavik, Iceland. He graduated in 2007 from AKI in Holland with a BFA in Media-Art. After living for a year in Montreal (Qc) he returned to Iceland right before the great financial collapse in 2008. Óskar uses video and kinetics to illustrate subtle contemplations. He has a sincere passion for self-sufficiency, synchronicity and altruism. When he is not constructing art he enjoys cooking, hiking and listening to old Otis Redding records.
