We
are presently entering the Chinese year of the Metal Tiger, a royal
symbol that should bring us action, energy and change throughout 2010.
I thought it’d be good to begin the New Year by returning to the
mission of the webzine: to support Montreal’s underground art
community. I would like to share with you some practical advice for
emerging artists who are often masters of many trades. Artists, like
everybody, are governed by a culture of performance, and to pursue an
artistic endeavor or career means many challenges. Although the
definition of “success” is unique to each, we can suggest certain
elements that constitute artistic success:
- substantial production
- regular exhibitions
- recognition amongst peers
- representation by a gallery
- have a studio ethic (regular and intense practice)
- keep their “day job”
- actively participate in the management of their career
- develop relations with their community
