* english follows ~ La peinture est un langage en soi. Le décodage d’un tableau est d’ailleurs souvent assimilé à la lecture. Certains artistes poussent l’analogie entre le peindre et l’écrire jusqu’à l’intégrer dans leurs compositions. De l’évocation de l’imprimerie jusqu’à l’exploration du geste d’écrire, un large spectre de possibilité s’offre aux artistes qui prennent la gageure d’ajouter cette strate de lecture à leurs images.

Dans sa sélection, Sottolichio a distingué trois manières d’intégrer l’écriture à une œuvre peinte. Certains artistes explorent la phrase, la suite ou la juxtaposition de mots. D’autres s’en tiennent au mot pour simplifier ou complexifier la lecture du tableau. Enfin, certains choisissent la voie de l’invention d’un langage, d’une graphie personnelle.

Painting is a language in its own right. Incidentally, decoding an image is often compared to reading. Some artists go further by taking the analogy between painting and writing to the point of integrating it in their compositions. From the evocation of printing, to the exploration of the gesture in writing, a large spectrum of possibilities is offered to the artists that dare to add this layer interpretation to their images.

In his selection, Sottolichio distinguished three ways in which writing is incorporated into a painted work. Some artists explore the sentence, the sequence or the juxtaposition of words. Others use words to simplify or to add complexity to the reading of a painting. Finally, some choose the creation of a new language, of an individual way of writing.
