Susan Shulman studied at the Musée des Beaux Arts and at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts. In 1996, she received her BFA with distinction from Concordia University. For almost 20 years, Susan has examined & explored the ancient ethereal symbols of her personal artistic journey. Inspired by a unique sense of family, motherhood and self, everything metamorphs into her synthesized iconography. Fish. Great Fish. Mystical. Spiritual. Genealogical. Fish.
My palette is bright and bold, creating tension and conflict between image and feeling. My paintings consist of portraits dealing with relationships, rebirth and metamorphosis. These narratives are a continuous introspective search full of exciting and revealing insights. They are imbedded with elements of my personal heritage, reflecting the passion of my soul. In my paintings, I attempt to maintain richness of colour, while still emitting a strangeness of image.
My personal myths evolve from my subconscious imagination and magical symbology. Fish are a continuous link in all my works. Fish are the sperm of future generations; the continuum of my history - flexible, beautiful creatures rising from the depth of the soul. They swim through all my multi-level realms, multi-dimensional, personal and ancestral memories. They are the living beings that remember all and unite the past, present and future fields through the ever-changing currents of quantum life. They are my symbols for fluid and soft movements, dancing through the mystical waters of my multi-layered incarnation.
They come in any shape, any colour, any size, and can swim at any depth. Fish are exotic, sensual, beautiful, and their scales are made up of the most mystical spectrum of colours. Fish have been an integral part of my paintings for the past 18 years; my symbolic vocabulary, my emotional magic, a metaphor for transformation and the spiritual voyage.
Fish are Love: Caressing the soul, the body and the mind. Fish are Faith: Their iridescent colours swimming through the ever-changing tides of life. Fish are Hope: Flowing against the currents... in search of better in search of more.
Fish is my poetry. I am fish.
All my pieces are contemplation of timeless memories. My mix of reality and fantasy. They are the past, present, future and parallel dimensions of my life - moments when I escape this universe, or rather, moments when I manifest a new one.
This collection of works represents inner struggles, growth, and the continuing search for my own truth through art & creativity which I wish to share. Art and truth are always one and the same universally. Welcome to my world of colour and enjoy the chronicles of my memories.
The Miniscapes Book covers a 15 year period of works portraying over 40 original illustrations approximately 10" x 14". They are essentially mixed media: markers, oil pastel and pencils and in two cases the addition of digital imagery - always in different combinations. Each "Miniscapes" is a reduced original digital copy individually hand-painted with gold and silver pens. They are all unique. Each artwork is autobiographical and includes glimpses of my personal alphabet and symbolic imagery that inhabit my larger paintings. A limited edition of 50 per illustration is created.
