Pour ce projet d'exposition, je veux explorer la notion d’ornementation en combinant l'installation, la céramique et l’estampe. Par cette approche multidisciplinaire, je veux ainsi créer une installation où on perçoit la rencontre forcée entre des esthétiques westerns (cowboys), japonaises et victoriennes. Premièrement, j'aimerais présenter une série de sérigraphie encadrée rehaussée à la gouache illustrant des vignettes de cowboys et de samouraï. Deuxièment, je veux présenter un papier peint fait en flocage d'un motif imitant la toile de Jouy, mais refaite avec des images de cowboys. Dernièrement, je veux présenter des pièces en céramique ornée de sérigraphie qui répète les mêmes motifs du papier peint. Le tout sera lié par deux couleurs dominantes, soit le rouge et le noir.

By accomplishing this exhibition project, I hope to explore the notion of ornamentation by combining installation, ceramic and printmaking. By using this multidisciplinary approach, I intend to create an installation where various aesthetics meet and force the viewer to confront simultaneously Western, Japanese and Victorian notions. Firstly, I will create a series of silkscreens, framed by gouache vignettes of cowboys and samurais. Secondly, I will create wallpaper imitating the toile de jouy pattern, only with cowboys. Lastly, I will present ceramics decorated with the same patterns as the wallpaper. The whole of the installation brought together by two main colors, red and black.

Amélie Pellerin fabrique des morceaux de corps avec son corps. Son expérience de la maladie et des chirurgies ainsi que son rapport au corps dysfonctionnel médicalisé ont provoqué une fragmentation de sa perception des corps biologique et psychique... un éclatement du concept d’unité, du tout.

Ancrée dans les espaces interreliés du dessin et de l’installation, sa pratique artistique est une exploration sans fin de la matérialité, de la sensualité et du déploiement du geste dans ce rapport au corps malade-morcelé.

Jérôme Havre dévoile ici des éléments à ce jour inédits dans sa grammaire visuelle. L’artiste présente des photographies de cages de zoo qui soulignent le paradoxe de leurs deux fonctions : protéger et enfermer. De plus, la recherche textile (dite des « objets d’ornement ») se resserre sur deux mystérieuses sculptures plus fermes, plus abstraites que les précédentes. Les deux Holothuries (concombres de mer) attirent le regard de par leur apparence à la fois tendre et fuyante, née de patients raccommodements de matériaux et de formes, mille piqûres des quelques vieux tissus chamarrés.

Jérôme Havre unveils new elements in his visual language. In his first exhibit at the gallery, he presents a series of photos of zoo cages that underline the paradox of their two functions: to protect and to enclose. In addition, he explores sculpture with textiles (from the series Ornamented Objects). Two mysterious forms, more solid and abstract than his previous hybrids, are named after Holothuria (sea cucumbers). Entrancing the spectator with their tenderness and elusiveness, born of patient patch working of materials: formed by his thousands of stitches and baroque fabrics.

Une manifestation d’art contemporain autochtone nord-américain. La cinquantaine d’œuvres sélectionnées par la commissaire mettent de l’avant les problématiques inhérentes au pouvoir du langage et au territoire dans le contexte colonial – problématiques toujours très vives et au cœur de l’expérience autochtone. Ces œuvres photographiques, picturales, sculpturales, vidéo et installatives dressent un portrait diversifié et fort de la communauté autochtone nord-américaine actuelle. Elles incarnent plusieurs voix s’unissant dans un même discours, illustrent une quête identitaire (les négociations opérées entre les deux systèmes – occidental et amérindien) et affirment la fierté d’une communauté plurielle. Chacune emploie une stratégie différente pour baliser le territoire, pour repousser l’assimilation et contrer l’oubli.

Language lives in the naming of places, and the memory of those places lives in language – combined, they are the building blocks of culture. What happens to a people when they are severed from their language? Severed from their land? How does one speak to the erasure of our historical and collective memories? Or adequately express culture when we have forgotten (or never knew) the words with which to read the landscape? How do we counter what David Garneau calls the “assimilationist project” and move beyond our collective wounds of amnesia, trauma, and psychic loss?

For contemporary artists working with textiles, the material and creative legacies that haunt these works are often downplayed or positioned discursively as ruptures from or subversions of tradition (“This ain’t your granny’s…”). Drawing from the broader original meaning of the loom as any implement or tool, HEIR/LOOMS is interested in the more complex and ambivalent relations that makers have with the (handmade) objects and labours that they have come to inherit.

The 12 artists included in the exhibit engage in distinct ways with the notion of “heirloom”— emulating or appropriating specific linguistic and creative traditions; revisiting nostalgic signifiers of family and home; incorporating hand-me-down and discarded materials; and collaborating on and with things left behind by mothers, grandparents, and anonymous strangers.
