Quand je suis venu au Canada pour les premières fois, je me souviens d’avoir aperçu en conduisant sur l'autoroute 10 une montagne complètement illuminée. Ce paysage m’a paru surréaliste, presque comme une installation artistique, ou bien une œuvre de land-art. Plus tard, j'ai appris que cette montagne était illuminée par 500 000 watts de lumières et était utilisée pour le ski alpin de nuit! J’avais entrevu le Mont Bromont. J'étais abasourdi. Ma jeunesse s’est déroulée à deux heures de route des Alpes suisses, les montagnes avaient toujours étés synonymes de vie sauvage, d'endroits difficile d'accès, sans les commodités habituelles ...

* english follows ~ deux séries de photographies qui, bien qu'indépendentes, se ressemblent de plusieurs façons. L’une est composée d’œuvres extraites de Trappings, une série par l’artiste sud africain Hentie van der Merwe de grandes photographies couleur d’uniformes militaires coloniaux exposés au Musée d’histoire militaire de Johannesburg. L’autre est un regroupement d’images en noir et blanc datant des années 40 de torses tatoués de détenus français. Alors que les prisonniers restent inconnus, les emblèmes incisés de leurs tatouages les distinguent et exposent leurs plus intimes vécus. À coté de ses images austères, initialement utilisées à des fins d’identification, les uniformes vides de Van de Merwe sont de spectrales représentations de rang et régiment évoquant les guerres coloniales passées et ceux qui y ont combattus. Chacune de ces séries photographiques suggère des notions de pouvoir et d’incarcération, d’appartenance collective et d’identité personnelle. | Two series of photographs that, while independent, relate in multiple ways. One consists of works from South African artist Hentie van der Merwe’s Trappings, a series of large-scale colour photographs of colonial military jackets on display at the Museum of Military History in Johannesburg. The other is a set of black and white images, dating back to the 1940s of the tattooed torsos of inmates in French jails. While the prisoners remain unknown, the incised emblems of their tattoos distinguish them and tell intimate stories of their lives. Alongside these stark images, which were used to identify prisoners, Van de Merwe’s empty uniforms are ghostly representations of rank and regiment that evoke past colonial wars and the men who fought in them. Each set of photographs speaks of power and incarceration, collective belonging and personal identity.

THE PAINTED UNIVERSE @ visual voice

The general public is invited to participate in the creation of a 16' x 8' artwork depicting various night sky objects. All art materials are provided. Help to create a mosaic of night sky images - a painted universe. At the end of the event Bettina will take a photo of the finished collaborative artwork before taking it down on Monday, 4th May. The participants can then come by her studio to pick up their painting along with a copy of the photo of the final "mural".

Meeting point between art and spirituality, the visionnary movement integrates universal symbols and spiritual concepts. This complex, detailed and high in colour style evoke the vast energetic dimensions that exist beyond our five senses and talk about a creative evolution, a liberation of the mind.

* english follows ~ le 22 avril 2009, l'illustration de Michèle Lévesque est à la une de tous les quotidiens Métro de la planète. L'artiste montréalaise nous parle de son travail. L'image de la planète transparente évoque sa fragilité, voire son éventuelle disparition. Les oiseaux et le papillon représentent le règne animal et les fleurs le monde végétal, le tout pour illustrer le thème mis de l'avant cette année : la biodiversité.

SUSAN SHULMAN | bio + folio

Susan Shulman studied at the Musée des Beaux Arts and at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts. In 1996, she received her BFA with distinction from Concordia University. For almost 20 years, Susan has examined & explored the ancient ethereal symbols of her personal artistic journey. Inspired by a unique sense of family, motherhood and self, everything metamorphs into her synthesized iconography. Fish. Great Fish. Mystical. Spiritual. Genealogical. Fish.

My palette is bright and bold, creating tension and conflict between image and feeling. My paintings consist of portraits dealing with relationships, rebirth and metamorphosis. These narratives are a continuous introspective search full of exciting and revealing insights. They are imbedded with elements of my personal heritage, reflecting the passion of my soul. In my paintings, I attempt to maintain richness of colour, while still emitting a strangeness of image.

Univers fragmenté, multiculturalisme, mondialisation, essor des nouvelles technologies ; Serge Marin affirme son appartenance au monde par le biais de l’espace pictural. Les formes choisies, suite à une écriture automatique de symboles, associées au travail de la couleur, structurent et dynamisent le tableau dans une économie de moyens. Ainsi, en parcourant son œuvre, nous sommes amenés à effectuer une lecture personnelle ; une sorte de jeu de décryptage au gré de l’humour et de l’invention afin d’échapper à une réalité à court d’imagination.
