YURI'S NIGHT @ snap! salon

Yuri's Night is an international celebration usually held on April 12 every year to commemorate the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, and the first Space Shuttle launch on April 12, 1981. In 2009, people will celebrate together in over 100 individual events and 32 countries around the world. Locations will include Los Angeles, Stockholm, Antarctica, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Houston and the International Space Station. And since April 12 falls on Easter Sunday this year, we've decided to party a little early.

Complot réunit dix artistes et dix historiens de l’art. Axé sur un principe de jumelage entre les artistes et les théoriciens, le projet résulte de la collaboration et de l’échange entre ses membres. Ainsi, la complicité et la réciprocité établie tout au long du processus permettent un renouvellement de l’interaction entre la création et la théorie. Le collectif regroupe de nouveaux membres et propose une thématique différente à chaque année, et cela depuis six ans déjà. Cette année, notre complot aura lieu sous le thème de l’espièglerie. Les artistes se prêtent au jeu par la création d’œuvres nous laissant toutes sur une pointe de malice. Tous les moyens sont possibles : appropriation, détournement, ludisme, tromperie, exagération, jeu de mots, etc.

MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA ~ appel

* english follows ~ Appel à Participation pour « L'HOMME À LA CAMÉRA : LA REPRISE GLOBALE » qui sera à la Biennale de Montréal du 1 au 31 mai 2009.

Il s'agit d'une vidéo participative inspirée par le chef d’œuvre de Vertov, L’Homme à la caméra. Tout le monde est invité à télécharger des extraits vidéo. Les contributions font partie d’une base de données à partir de laquelle le logiciel crée un montage selon l’original. Pour participer, cliquez sur les tags ou les scènes - pour les scènes choisissez une, cliquez sur les plans. On invite l'interprétation, ce n'est pas nécessaire imiter l'original. Votre site web est lié sous le titre Participants si vous donnez votre url.

Chaque jour le logiciel crée une nouvelle version du film. À gauche vous avez l'original de Vertov, a droite la reprise. Le logiciel alterne les téléchargements donc la reprise n'est jamais la même. Les plans noirs attendent un téléchargement. Peut-être que vous pouriez les remplir ?

Call for Participation for « MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA : THE GLOBAL REMAKE » to screen in the Montreal Biennial May 1 to 31, 2009.

This piece consists of a mashup of Vertov's 1929 film. People around the world are uploading footage. To upload, explore the scene index, click on any scene to see the shot list, or look at the tags. Interpretations are welcome, uploads do not have to be a copy of the original shot. Full instructions and more info are on the website. When you upload, your website is linked to this one if you choose to provide the link.

Everyday a new version of the movie is built online. On the left is Vertov’s original. On the right is a shot uploaded from a participant. When there is more than one upload per shot the uploads are rotated daily.

Black shots are still waiting for an upload ; perhaps you can fill them in?

* english follows ~ L'objectif de cet atelier est de se familiariser avec la photographie. L'explosion des nouveaux médias a permis à certains artistes d'explorer des nouvelles avenues du domaine et à d'autres de perfectionner leurs techniques traditionnelles. Nous verrons comment l'artiste Alana Riley a utilisé ce médium pour créer des objets d'art, documenter la vie quotidienne et simplement raconter une histoire. Elle nous présente une série de portraits interactifs prise lors des Ateliers Portes Ouvertes du MILE END en mai, 2008. (Atelier bilingue).

The workshop explores photography and how artists have used the camera to create works of art, describe events and tell a story. Photography is changing. The influx of digital media has led artists down new paths, whereas others have preserved and polished their craft. The workshop will showcase the work of Alana Riley, who will present Let's Get Physical, a series of interactive portraits taken with the public during Les Ateliers Portes Ouvertes du Mile End in May, 2008.
