Judith Brisson

The debate around art as necessity vs luxury is an interesting one..but not quite as interesting as the debate around art and money. Undoubtedly, the art urge is an expensive habit to pursue, no matter how basic or free one's materials are: any creation requires time.. to conceive, to create, and to find an audience. As such, money, who has it and who is willing to contribute some to artists and their creations is a major issue, both in private and public art consumption - if I can call it that. My question is, in this "odd couple" arrangement, who is setting the agenda for artistic creation? What kind of art is not finding an audience or is not being created because of unseen economic or political forces that might be driving the art economy? To what degree are artists bending themselves to carve out their own space in this arena?
